Textured Hair & Darrly George: Updating Two Hair News Stories

Textured Hair & Darrly George: Updating Two Hair News Stories

Below, we are updating on two stories we have covered here in one way or another…

Firstly, a law was signed as of Nov. 17th that New York State would require their cosmetology schools to include education about texture hair into their curriculum. As stated in the law, cosmetology graduates should be able to provide services “to individuals with all hair types and textures, including, but not limited to, various curl or wave patterns, hair strand thicknesses, and volumes of hair.” These new requirements are supported by the Professional Beauty Association’s Texture Education Collective, with materials, resources, and guidance from them to be provided for the updated state board exam.

Until now, cosmetology schools haven’t been taught the specific stylings needed to care for textured hair.

The new law is explained in detail here:

Also, the trial and tribulations of Darryl George, the Texas high school student who we reported on who was removed from his school supposedly because his hairstyle violated the school’s dress code, continues. The eighteen-year-old was suspended again this week after returning to Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu.

The history of George’s hair problems begins with his first suspension in August, where he was placed in a cubicle away from his classroom, his schoolwork delivered to him. Later, George was transferred to a disciplinary school, and now he has been removed once again after coming back to his school.

From the initial suspension, George’s hair was said to violate the school dress code where male students are not allowed to have their hair “extend, at any time, below the eyebrows or below the earlobes.”

Mr. George styles his hair in such a way that he pins his long licks on his head in a “barrel roll.” George’s family has filed a lawsuit claiming that the school district policy violates the CROWN Act.
