A Slap ‘Heard (and Felt) Around The World’ Over Jada Pinkett Smith’s Alopecia

A Slap ‘Heard (and Felt) Around The World’ Over Jada Pinkett Smith’s Alopecia

It really was anybody’s guess what would happen when the Oscars returned full force post (or at least close to post) the pandemic. And even though the 94th Academy Awards probably overstayed its welcome (clocking in over four hours) and the producers hedged their bets with three female hosts in Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall, by far Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, right on stage, had to be the most unforgettable moment.

And it was all over hair.

Rock came out to present the Oscar for “Documentary Feature.” When doing so, he made a quick quip over Jada Pinkett-Smith, Will Smith’s wife’s, hair. Pinkett Smith currently sports very closed-cropped hair due to her alopecia, something she revealed to the public at large in 2018. Will Smith, obviously not finding the joke funny (and from when the camera flashed on his wife, she didn’t seem to take to the joke either), marched on stage and slapped Rock. Smith then returned to his seat and continued to yell profanities to a stunned Rock…and an equally stunned audience.

Interestingly enough, Chris Rock made a well-received documentary about black women’s hair in 2009 called Good Hair. And Smith went on to win the “Best Actor” award for King Richard later during the Oscar telecast.

Indeed, there have been controversial, or at least notable, Academy Award hair moments. From Cher’s feather headdress to Elizabeth Taylor’s diamond tiara to style-setting bangs, updos, and braids from our best and brightest. Even after the award show, actress Julia Fox made hair news with the accessory she sported and an afterparty. The Uncut Gems star was seen clutching a purse made of human hair.

This was not a night where hair replacement or extensions were discussed (not that they would be), but hair did seem to take center stage at this year’s Academy Awards.
